12/31/2023 0 Comments Cellar door provisions![]() The good news is that they have some pretty amazing baked goods so while you wait, you can have a pastry as an appetizer. Our wait for 2 people was probably around 15 minutes. You place your order at the counter, but they don’t start making your food until you’ve gotten a seat. Cellar Door is made up of a couple individual tables and a very large communal one. Came in around 11 on a Sunday and the place was full. I think it would be impossible to be in a bad mood while eating here. Overall I’m glad we tried it but this won’t be making the return list when we come back to Chicago.ĭelicious brunch in a bright setting. The canele was also very good along with the cats tongue strawberry filled sandwich cookie. The nettle quiche was rich and decadent and the quiche was the richest example of a savory custard I’ve ever eaten. A certain bakery in Salt Lake City still holds the title of best kouign-amann I’ve ever had. So I peeled off the layer of burnt sugar but then I didn’t get the crackly buttery sugar goodness that makes a kouign-amann a kouign-amann. There is supposed to be a crackly crunch of caramelized sugar so I held my breath while taking my first bite. I got back to where we were staying and my husbands first comment was they looked burnt. Where the train derailed was with the kouign-amanns. With that being said, when I was baking for a living, we had at least the first round of all pastries ready to go before we opened our doors for the day. I do not mind waiting for food so I got bread and butter while the kouign-amanns came out of the oven. When I walked in, the pastry selection was limited because items were still coming out of the oven. Not being from Chicago I wanted to try out the fantastic sounding pastries before we headed back home. I found out about this bakery from a Chicago tribune article. Good luck to Cellar Door Provisions - it’s a gem. From their conversation regarding the food they seemed to be in the industry, they were very likely were chefs themselves. The two men sitting next to me ordered the braised radish and the fermented cabbage dishes (this was more appetizing than it sounds). There is a breakfast menu and a lunch menu, each with five items on it. As food was delivered to various people at the table heads would turn to get a glimpse of the dish and then to compare it to the short daily menu on the wall. The presentation, and the watercress salad with edible flowers, was beautiful. The quiche was creamy, smooth and a delicious blend of flavors. It is a new, small, and simple place with amazing artisan food! I had the quiche with marjoram and sumac, and a cup of coffee. Tastes as beautiful as it looks! I stumbled upon this spot mistaking it for a coffee shop. It was fun while it lasted, but a girl likes to eat. Do you know how many full sized turnips I can get for $ 10? Sorry, Cellar. I will probably not be back, because there are other brunch places out there that will actually feed me. I left hungry, bewildered, and disappointed, which no one is looking for in a brunch. All I could think was: «Yeah, THE FOOD.» He came back and said, «They forgot the chili oil.» Again, I stared at this massive dinner plate with a side dish of food on it. I don’t even think I got a whole turnip in the dish… The runner took my plate away after he set it down (and I gave the plate a look of horror), and said he had forgotten something. You can see from the picture I posted how silly it looks on the giant dinner plate. But it was no more than a serving spoonful of food in total. The turnip was shaved thin, with some grilled ramps, a sauce on the bottom and supposedly a chili oil on top. I realize they do it light here, but the size of my dish was ridiculous for the $ 10 it cost. When it did, it was the saddest and most disappointing «meal» I have ever seen. My friend received her dish, and I waited a little longer for mine to come. I ordered pastries to share and decided I would try the «Turnip» from the lunch menu. This time I decided to try something different. I had been here once before and had the quiche - which, as I said, delicious. The place itself is beautiful with plenty of light and friendly staff. The quiche is unlike any other I have eaten. The name alone makes me happy - as it is the most beautiful phrase. Tl dr: I paid $ 10 for a half a turnip and left hungry.
